Despite the unprecedented economic challenges the UK faced in 2020, UK spending on the military continued to rise. Figures released on the 26 April 2021 showed a 2.9% increase for 2020, but sadly this was just the beginning.
In 2021 the military budget will increase by over 10%, the largest increase in over 70 years, costing an additional £24 billion by the end of this Parliament. This can’t go on.
If we really are to ‘build back better’ we need a radical change of priorities, building security by investing in vital health and public services, not cold-war weaponry.
